  • i am born in 1951, married to the best wife of mine, father of two adults sons, owner of a flat in vienna and a weekend-house near the lake "neusiedler see". i work as a technician in customer services of the local electricity board. my pc is connected to yours via a cable modem (chello). my main interests are improvements to the system. this is done by studying various magazines and their tips + tricks columns, surfing to various shareware and commercial software pages on the net, discussing the topics which have arisen with friends and colleagues and final trying out the modifications felt to be possible (...surely never forget to make a backup...). i edit ini files or make new ones, edit appropriate keys in the registry, install newer dll files (... it´s a disgrace, what has been installed in our machines by some sort of idiot...), possibly delete or add something and i am always pleased if it´s a working enhancement. if it works, it´s fine, if not, i am surely not guilty, but the unscrupulous coworkers of our friend.
  • i have owned different computers for a pretty long time, i grew up with them as it were. my first contact having taken place on one well remembered christmas-eve (my sons were still very young) when a so-called telegame (you surely have some remarks of the type: black-and-white, two racquets that could be guided up- and downwards, a white dot, and beep, beep, plop...) was given to me. soon afterwards i bought in addition an atari gaming device. a short time later i afforded a philips´ MSX computer with 48kRAM (past all belief)! it performed fantastically well, madly fast and for the first time there was a possibility to store something on casette-recorder tapes. soon this little computer was too slow and and i bought, instead of the already overhauled 64 a commodore 128. After hundreds of hours of playing, an AMIGA 500 (a "more correct" computer) made it into the house. soon a second one was linked to it. this one was equipped with an enormous 42MB hard disk. i extended the memory and the machine became accelerated in every possible way. games, applications, tutorials and so on were purchased and then as a climax, the data were saved on VCR-casettes via an interface, soldered by myself. finally, because it was so cheap oh.., i purchased another 500+. at that time, two out of the three amigas were used by myself and my sons solely for playing games. for the third i tried many, many shareware-programs to tune the system (maybe you know him: cheers to fred fish!). in my company, a 386 with wordperfect2 under ms-dos5.0 was purchased and because i wanted to become acquainted with this machine and my sons had already been mumbling about for nearly a whole year, my first pc appeared. of course it was one of the best at that time; a 486dx2 with 66MHz and a 14" screen running under windows3.10! soon i noticed that msdos and windows were a weak compromise compared to the operating system used by AMIGA. so i had to learn again how i could probably remedy this. at that time there was, although desperately needed, actually nothing at hand; the best available was pc-tools (remember?). i treated the machine with windows 3.11 as soon as it was released. hundreds of shareware-programs were tried out, thousands of computer-related magazines and their tips heeded. nevertheless the machine was a pain, even after i have put a 486dx4/80 and 32MB inside. with the appearance of win95 and after changing to 486dx4/100 for a short time, the system was acceptable.

  • you probably know the rest of the story from your own experience. in my own case the present system consists of: AMD AthlonTM/1000, ~180GB, 192MB and a 19" screen.
  • in the summer half-year i´m performing model flights, during winter-time i build new models, if my pc lefts time to do it.
